Recently I received an awesome email. It was from the Universe. (Yeah, seriously. You can subscribe to receive them here. And yes, of course I know they’re not really from the Universe. It’s a guy named Mike Dooley who writes them on behalf of the Universe, but man, is he good!)
The email went like this…
Andrea, it’s simply a matter of applying who you already are to what you now face. That’s all that matters. Because by design, who you are is always the greater.
Powerful stuff. I was blown away. So much so that I emailed it to Denise, who said…
People need to convince themselves that this is a truth.
Agreed. We all need to convince ourselves that this is our truth. We are each greater than the trials we face. Even when we think that we aren’t. As human beings it’s in our nature to survive and be great.
But how?
I think that the first step is to recognize your own strengths. In fact, write a list of your best characteristics. Here’s my list…
- Strong
- Kind
- Loving
- Funny
- Tenacious
- Enduring
- Smart
If I apply who I am to what I’m facing now (or in the past or in the future), with qualities like this, of course I’m going to thrive and survive and be greater than the tribulations that I may be facing.
So write your list. Don’t be embarassed or feel that you’re tooting your own horn. Just do it.
Then review the list and recognize that you, too, can and will be greater than what it is you’re facing. Go ahead…apply who you are. It’s how we’re designed.

Spot on. There should be a commencement address like this for adults who “graduate” from a particularly challenging struggle.
Saw a good one today: you don’t have to be fearless, just don’t let fear stop you. Works well with the “all you have is all you need” theme here. Nicely done.
