Most of the time it’s easy to do what’s comfortable.
Not so easy to do things out of your comfort zone, even if they’re things you want to do. The monkey mind can surely throw out a helluva lot of barriers. Telling us all of the reasons why we shouldn’t do something, why it isn’t good for us, and why we might fail.
All true. Maybe it’s not the best idea, maybe there are reasons, and maybe we might fail.
Or we could have a staggeringly amazing experience that we remember for the rest of our days.
Hmmmm…so should we really give over to doubts, worries, and concerns? Or should we push ourselves to experience awesome things in our lives?
Well, I’m sure you know that I’m going to tell you to push yourself a bit.
Think of it this way. What kind of life will you have if you always live in your comfort zone? Predictable at best. Perhaps miserable at worst. Or just plain mediocre. And I’m guessing that if you’re reading this blog you don’t want to be mediocre.
So get out of your goddamn comfort zone.
Ha. Easier said than done, no doubt.
I will be the first to admit that it is not easy to step out of the double yellow lines that run down both sides of your comfort zone. In fact, many times there is a lot of discomfort. Perhaps even panic, dread, and tears. And who likes to feel uncomfortable? I know I sure don’t.
But it’s almost as if feeling uncomfortable is a requirement of stretching and growing. So we need to push through the anxiety, the panic, the dread, the rantings, and the tears. Because the only way we’re going to cross the double yellow line is by stepping over it and hoping for the best. Hoping there isn’t a semi truck on the other side, waiting to plow us down.
And if you do get plowed down when you step outside of the comfy, cozy box that is your comfort zone, know that despite the pain and agony you may feel, you’ve done an amazing thing for yourself. Stretching and growing and expanding your world. And you’ll be a better, stronger person for it.
When you get beyond the discomfort, you’ll realize it’s empowering. Really effing empowering.
So do it! Screw mediocrity! Get the hell out of your comfort zone! You’ll be so glad you did.
