This weekend my sister called me and asked for an impromptu favor…could I come help her friend hang curtain rods.
Her friend is a single mom who just bought a new house.
The call went something like this…
My sister: Hey, do you want to see Michelle’s new house?
(My sister knows I have a thing for houses and decorating, so this was a no-brainer.)
Me: Sure. When?
My sister: Now.
(Did I mention it was 9pm? Still a no-brainer.)
Me: Sure. Will you pick me up?
My sister: Yes. Oh, and there’s one more thing…can you help her hang some curtain rods.
Me: Sure! I’d love to!
(For many people, this might have been a game changer, but for me it was the final selling point!)
So my sister picked me up, I got a tour of Michelle’s adorable new house, and Michelle got her curtains and curtain rods hung. Everyone was happy.
Michelle was thanking us profusely, but to me it was just something fun to do. I love to help people fix up their homes, plus I got to meet someone new.
Since it’s World Kindness Week, I guess I could consider this as an act of kindness that I shared with someone.
But here’s the thing…it was fun and easy. And I guess that’s the point. Being kind to people doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be you doing you…doing the things that you love and that come easily to you. Just you being you, sharing the essence of who you are.
Now go do it!
