This weekend I watched a video that suggested that being shy is just a nice way of saying that you’re afraid.
Now we can get into a whole debate on the virtues of being an introvert or an extrovert, but that’s not the point. I think that occasionally all of us feel uncomfortable or perhaps even shy. Nothing wrong with that.
But the question is, what do we do when we’re feeling shy or uncomfortable or maybe even afraid? Do we back away from the matter at hand? Do we hide? Do we avoid? In essence, do we run [silently] screaming?
I’m guessing that most of us have done any or all of those things at one time or another.
And I would ask, what did you gain from it? Very likely not much at all.
But imagine for a minute what you might have gained if you’d pushed yourself out of your comfort zone and just jumped into whatever the situation was? Maybe not much would have changed. But maybe, just maybe, you might have had an exciting experience, met amazing people, and had a terrific time.
How awesome would that have been? Pretty awesome, if you ask me.
So how about this? Let’s all make an effort to stop being scared or shy or whatever you want to call it. Let’s put ourselves out there in the world – out of our comfort zones and throw ourselves into life a bit more every day.
Start today!

I have gotten better at reaching out, I think I am making a choice to be curious about others, and that takes my focus from my shy self!

Good for you, Marilyn! It really gets easier with practice, doesn’t it?
