The best thing that can happen to you today on Valentine’s Day (and, in fact, on any other days of the year as well), is that you learn to love yourself.
So many of us – myself included – look to others to make our lives what we want them to be, rather than resolving to do for ourselves what it will take to make our lives the best they can be.
That’s an awful lot of pressure to put on a relationship.
We live in a society that is so geared to love and sex and coupledom and romance and all that jazz. And lest I sound like an uptight spinster, I’ll be honest…I want those things in my life too.
But.
I’ve finally realized that if I don’t love myself first and tone down the need for constant acceptance from others – especially romantic partner types – I’m going to be in for a lifetime of hurt, by putting too-large demands on a relationship to make me happy. Happy in ways that I can only be if I am at peace with myself and my life choices.
So I’ve decided to build a life that I love. For myself and by myself. And maybe when I’m on that path of juicy life goodness, the right person will come along. Or maybe he won’t. If he doesn’t, I’ll be in a place in which I love my life and love myself.
If he does come along, I’ll be in a place in which I love my life and love myself. And any relationship I add to my life will be the icing on an already awesome cake!
So go love your life and love yourself*!
