It never ceases to amaze me when people who seem to have it all – whether it’s smarts, looks, money, prestige, or some combination of those – turn out to be insecure and feel like they’re lacking.
I recently overheard someone with 3 out of the 4 traits listed above comparing her appearance to another woman’s. I was stunned. She is a brilliant and accomplished woman with an admirable passion for her work. And yet she was feeling insecure about how she looked compared to another woman’s appearance.
When are we going to stop this nonsense and give ourselves credit for all that we are and all we have worked so hard to achieve?
We – especially women – need to stop comparing ourselves to others and assessing our own worth based on someone else’s looks, talents, and/or riches.
Start looking at yourself. Start valuing yourself and your unique and beautiful traits.
If you don’t know how to value yourself, start doing this – every day write down 5 wonderful things about yourself. Do not put down your pen until you come up with 5 things. Start like this on day 1:
I am…
- Intelligent
- Charming
- Beautiful
- Funny
- Quirky
Then read your list aloud to yourself.
For day 2, add on to your day 1 list. Day 2 will look like this:
I am…
- Intelligent
- Charming
- Beautiful
- Funny
- Quirky
- Warm
- Loving
- Creative
- Clever
- A good friend
For day 2, read the list of 10 items aloud to yourself. And so on. Each day add 5 things to your list and continue to read the list aloud to yourself. As time goes by, you will need to dig deeper to come up with more special things to say.
Instead of focusing on others and trying to become more like other people, you will begin to turn the focus to yourself and all of the wonderful things about you. The idea is that you will begin to recognize the things that are special about you. Hopefully you will get to know yourself in a way that will allow you to stop comparing yourself to others, and maybe even fall in love with your own special way of being in this world. Because you’re perfect just as you are!
So stop comparing and start your list today. We’ve got a lot of work to do, people!
